Dawn- I have really been struggling to understand Howard's perspective regarding the legacy of privilege and "colonial remnants.  On page 61 he quotes another author and writes....

The simple privilege of buying cheap french fries in a fast-food restaurant, for example, is supported by a complex

system of dominance and subordination, wherein American-owned foreign agribusiness is destroying the culture,

land base, and livelihood of peasant farm families 8,000 miles from my neighborhood burger stand.

Any enlightenment?

Julie, I honestly had to read this statement over and over again and I'm still not sure I understand the implications...it seems to me that the "Westernization" of foreign countries could be seen as the pursuance of "white dominance" and the fact that McDonald's can be found on every street corner in the free world implies the dominance of white culture.  As for the peasant farm families, the potatoes have to come from some where???  In some ways, couldn't this complex system benefit this culture and help their livelihood?

Perhaps I am naive, but I have never thought about cultural dominance or the fact that we (as whites) continue to perpetuate the model that "keeps the rich, rich, and the poor, poor".  I agree with Howard, I don't think white people of our nation are uncaring and cruel.  The more plausible explanation is that so many of us are not touched by poverty.
