Announcements

2/11/08

Just a reminder that we will not be meeting for class this week on Thursday. Instead, you will be working on your research, reading the article that Caitlin posted, and coming to your other class early to work on your data in a small group. You are not required to post a blog this week as the reading does not pertain to our course, but feel free to do one if you have some thoughts to share. Be sure you turn in your Capstone Experience Proposal through uLearn by Thursday.

FYI - Caitlin will be joining us in class this week to talk a little about your action research. She is planning to give you some overview and possibly some readings to help prepare you for next week. The plan for next week is for her (and some of us) to work with you in smaller groups while you have your data in front of you. We are asking that the people in Diane's class arrive at 4:00 and work on data until 5:00. (Diane will ask the doc. students to arrive at 5:00 for her class). We would like for those of you in Olga's class to stay an extra hour after her class (7-8) to work on your data. Remember that our (Rhina's) class will not be meeting on Thursday, Feb. 14 as it is set aside for you to work on research. Hear you on Thursday!

Caren had asked for some clarification about the Book Buddy reading dates, posts, and class discussion. She thought my response was helpful and worth posting for the rest of you so here it is...

As far as the outline - come up with dates by which both of you will have read chapters/portions of the book. By that date, you will just need to write your response to the book up to that point, including a brief (1-2 sentence) overview of what you've been reading about. Your response can be emotional, critical, thought-provoking, connections to self or other readings, questions to your book buddy. Think of it as an informal chat with a friend who is reading the same thing. When I assign a date for you and your book buddy to facilitate a conversation with the group, you would need to offer a BRIEF overview of the main points of the book thus far (people will have had a chance to look at your conversations on the Wiki) and then ask a couple of questions or offer a perspective that might provoke some thought and conversation.

By the way - I noticed that many of you have not added Julie to your blogroll. While you're doing that - add mine which I posted right below hers.

Class follow-up: Below is the link to the article I mentioned during class on the MLK lesson a parent complained about:

http://r.smartbrief.com/resp/jCccpaoHfgiuwyCibHaeRCrO?format=standard

ULearn/Crit. Child: Those of you who have not posted part 1 of the Crit. Child Project on ULearn, please do so (even if you already emailed it to me). I would like to check it and comment on it through ULearn. It will also help when calculating grades at the end of the semester.

Blogs: To clarify - your blogs for readings will be due the Monday after the class we are scheduled to discuss them. This gives you the option to respond prior to class or after the class discussion. You may choose to post one blog about both articles or two posts - one per article each week. Also, don't feel limited to the articles for your posts. You may refer to class discussions, the book(s) you are reading, other research, etc. that relate to the topics raised in the articles. Your blog page is yours, so feel free to express your creativity and also share other things you want to share - Thought for the Day, photos, anecdotes, humor, etc.

Research: Let me know through email if you would like for Caitlin to join us on Elluminate in the next couple of weeks.

BooK Buddies: I will be assigning dates to each set of Book Buddies to be able to share a little and initiate some class discussion on an issue raised in the book you are reading. Of course you will not be done with the entire book, but you will probably have some points that came up for you while reading.

ULearn/Blogging

If you are having problems getting into ULearn, just call the help desk. You will need your GSU id so have that ready. I checked all the work that was turned in to me through ULearn. I liked  being able to get your work that way and think it will work well for this class. Please let me know if you are having issues with blogs or ULearn if you haven't already done so. Also, check the address you posted on the wiki to make sure it's correct. A few of the links do not work.

Reading Responses

Finally, it was my intention that you post your blog about the reading prior to the class date on which it is due. I'd like your input on what is most useful to you or if you would like an option about whether you post before or after class. I like the idea of people having started some conversations prior to class but I also like the idea of continuing a conversation after class.

Research

Think about whether or not you would like a working session with Caitlin to work on analyzing data. She could actually join us in the virtual classroom or meet in person.

I will be logged in by 4:00 today so join me if you have questions that are specific to you or if you need to test out your equipment. The only real advice I got was to ask you all to make sure that you enter the correct speed when you are configuring your computer. Please check. I will be logging in from home so call me at 404-549-9792 if you are having problems. I look forward to another adventure this evening.

What I want you to do by next Thursday:

1. Post your blog

2. Comment on at least two classmates' blogs

3. Go to ULearn, find the assignment page, and submit part 1 of the Critical Child through ULearn. To get to ULearn, go to the GSU page and in the top right you will see an icon for ULearn. Click on it, use your GSU info. to login and explore. I am considering having you turn in all assignments and also do your book blogs through ULearn. Try it out and let me know if this could be an option for us.

4. If you had issues on Elluminate, other than slow down with text & eventually mic, contact the Elluminate people for advice. I will ask about the two issues everyone had.

Please do contact me if you need help. Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

PS - It feels like our course now owns the Wiki page...

WOW!!!!!! Class tonight was 2 hours of our lives we will never get back. Just think of what we could have done to change the world if we gave our total 36 hours (give or take all the minutes some of us were on and off)!!!!! Oh well....

It felt really good to get to my email, after a much needed 4.5 hours away from the offending technology, to find such kind, encouraging words from so many of you. Thanks. It's nice to know there was empathy on your ends. I'm going to do some serious thinking and exploring over the next week to see how we can best do this class and not waste precious time over technology. Thanks for hanging in there with me, each and every one of you. I am tired now and will post a message with all the information I tried to give you during "class" time tomorrow.

Elluminate trouble?

If your students need to have the email resent, have them go to the log in page and enter their GSU student email address at the "Forgot your password?"  page.  Here is the link to the log in page:
https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=221&password=M.294D269FCE48392C1BBD99C6CAD7DF
Remind them that the email is from the "vClass Administrator" and it goes to their official GSU student email account, not uLearn or some other external email unless they have forwarded it.

Thanks,
Tricia
